LifePort Liver Transporter by Organ Recovery Systems Wins Fast Company’s 2023 Innovation by Design Award in the ‘Health’ Category

Celebrating more than a decade of Innovation by Design, the 2023 honorees include several hundred projects, products, and services from Adobe, PepsiCo, Canva, and others.

ITASCA, Ill.--()--Organ Recovery Systems (ORS) is honored to announce that its LifePort Liver Transporter was selected as the winner in the ‘Health’ category in Fast Company’s Innovation by Design Awards for 2023.

The Innovation by Design Awards, which can be found in the September 2023 issue of Fast Company, honor the designers and businesses solving the most crucial problems of today and anticipating the pressing issues of tomorrow. The competition, now in its 12th year, features a range of blue-chip multinational companies, emerging startups, and promising young talents. The Innovation by Design Award is one of the most sought-after design awards in the industry.

LifePort Liver Transporter (LLT) is a proprietary medical device designed to optimize the quality of donated livers for clinical transplantation via precision-controlled hypothermic machine perfusion (HMP). HMP mimics the body’s blood flow by gently pumping a physiologic, oxygenated, nutrient-rich preservation solution in a hypothermic environment to keep a donated organ as healthy as possible for a waiting transplant recipient. Clinical studies have demonstrated LLT’s ease of use and robust transportability from donor bedside to recipient operating room. As well, liver preservation via oxygenated HMP has been shown to help improve patient outcomes and potentially expand the pool of available organs by enabling the clinical use of donated livers historically considered unacceptable for transplantation.

“We are very honored that LifePort Liver Transporter and Organ Recovery Systems have been recognized for this award, and most grateful for the visibility this opportunity brings to organ donation and transplantation,” said David Kravitz, CEO of ORS. “The course of donation and transplantation is a marvel of medicine and human compassion as one family’s tragedy is transformed into a life-saving opportunity for others. We aim to support this remarkable process with medical innovations that safely and effectively preserve and transport donor organs to help improve the odds that each gift of donation provides a second chance at life.”

He continued, “Throughout our 25 years serving the field of transplantation, we are humbled by the courage and kindness of donor families and the immense effort of the clinical organ procurement and transplant community to save lives. As this award honors the contributions of each ORS team member, clinical advisor, and industrial partner who supported this project, we honor and spotlight our heroes – the donor families and all who serve on the frontlines of organ procurement and transplantation for their resolve and commitment to life.”

“So much innovation news these days is focused on AI,” said Brendan Vaughan, editor-in-chief of Fast Company. “This year’s Innovation by Design honorees are a reminder that it’s human ingenuity that drives invention.”

This year’s judges include renowned designers from a variety of disciplines, business leaders from some of the most innovative companies in the world, and Fast Company’s own writers and editors. Entries are judged on the key ingredients of innovation: functionality, originality, beauty, sustainability, user insight, cultural impact, and business impact.

Winners, finalists, and honorable mentions are featured online, and winners and finalists are featured in the issue of Fast Company magazine, on newsstands on August 29, 2023.
